2024-06-15: Mark Dowling’s 60th Birthday Party

I have known Mark since 1994, when we both worked for the Center for the New West. That’s several ( 32) years ago. Over those years, we have become close friends. Mark did so much to celebrate my 60th birthday, 2 years earlier, it was great to be a part of his. It’s wonderful to have an enduring relationship with such great guy.

Santa Anita Racetrack

I had never been to the track, It was quite impressive, given the history. I barely got past the front gate, and I was surrounded by reminders of significant history. This is where the famous horse “Seabiscuit” won his last race, at the Santa Anita Handicap in 1940 (also known as the “Hundred-Grander”). Seabiscuit died in 1947 and is buried at Ridgewood Ranch in Mendocino County, California. In 2009, my family and I took a guided tour of Ridgewood Ranch. For that reason, it was even more special to visit the track.

I got there 1.5 hours before the first race. So, the park was practically empty. That was fine with me. I enjoyed seeing everything before the crowds showed up.

Mark reserved a suite at the Stretch-Run on the 4th floor. We had fantastic views. It was bright and warm, getting up to 88F by 4pm. But, we were in the shade, so it was just perfect with the breeze.

I managed to say a few heartfelt words about Mark being my best friend. Other people added their own sentimental memories. It was a sappy moment, but he deserved it.

On my way out, I got a close-up with a couple of the celebrities. They both gave me the “side-eye”.
