2024-07-13: Stepladder Ranch and Creamery

Mom drove down from Mare Island, and met me in Morro Bay. We both had fish (locally caught) for dinner at Dorn’s. The next morning we drove about an hour up the coast along Highway 1, just past Cambria. The stream pictured below is San Simeon Creek.

Our destination was a ranch/creamery that produces goat cheese. The ranch (through several different owners) has been in existence since 1870, started by a dutch family. I have ordered some of their specialty cheeses, and they are amazing. So, I suggested to Mom that we go take a tour. Mom loves outings like this.

This is the “milking machine”. The tour guide assured me that the goats love to go into that contraption. I don’t understand,… but I’m not a goat with an udder full of milk.

The adult goats were quite friendly. Several of them came up to the fence and wanted me to pet them.

The tour guide said that goats have rectangular pupils. Apparently, this allows them to see danger approaching from their peripheral vision. I asked this goat to show me her pupils, and she gave me a good long stare.

The baby goats were pretty cute…. I have to say.

A group of baby goats were very interested in me, and they tried to eat my pants. I have “goat-slobber” on them as proof. The baby goats start out with numbers. Later they are given names. I had a particularly strong human-to-goat bond with #168 and #198. Maybe those should be my new lotto numbers.

Goat #153 saw the slobber from other goats on my pants and wanted to see if they could get a little attention. I did my best. But, do you see the white hair on me? OMG… I’m OLD!

The creamery has won lots of awards over the years. These are ones from last year. The 2024 ribbons hadn’t been put out yet.

All in all, a very enjoyable side-trip.

However, after getting up-close-and-personal with so many goats, I asked Mom to find a stick to scrape the poop off my tires. A suitable one was found, and the carpet in my car was very grateful.

  1. What great pictures! I attended this event and snapped photos too but yours were better,… much better. And they tell the story so well of a sheep farm on San Simeon Creek Road not far from Hearst Castle growing it’s business with farm tours, boutique cheeses, innovation and hard work.

  2. Very cool Van!! The cheese place look’s like fun. Also love the geology lesson.
I bet your Mom had a Great Time.
    Thank You for sharing.
