Milestones
- Part of my 1st Annual “Bike-A-Palooza” (SEE the Whole Trip)
I rented a cabin at Mormon Lake Lodge which is surrounded by a Ponderosa Pine forest in Northern Arizona, just outside Flagstaff.
This picture was taken out the front door of my cabin. After this, I went to get sandwiches from the local deli/shop so I have something to eat along the trail.
- The bike ride I took was some of the most beautiful forest and open space you would ever find.
- I saw dozens of tarantula spiders crossing the road. EEEEWWWWWWW! The species in this area is known as the Grand Canyon black tarantula. They usually start showing up around the end of September or the first week of October. The males are migrating to find a mate.
- Lake Mary is named after Mary Riordan, a daughter of the wealthy lumber barons who built the dam in 1904 for a water supply for Flagstaff.
- The Lake Mary area is home to populations of elk and deer. The waters themselves attract various bird species including the great blue heron and the bald eagle.
- This was my 7th “Half-Century” ride (50 miles).
