The View from my campsite…

Wonderfully convenient location, perfectly gorgeous view, and outstanding weather. I was spoiled.

Is this a “gnarly” place to put my tent… or what?

I got setup quickly, and pulled out my beach lounge-chair. It’s not often I get the combination of bright sun, soft sand, and ocean waves. As Pauly Shore used to say…. “Gonna work on my ‘tannage,’ … BU-DDY.”

As the sun went down, I cooked polish sausages over my campfire for dinner.

Biking up the coast…

My first stop along Carlsbad Boulevard.

Captain John Aldridge Frazier (1833-1899) was a merchant seaman and farmer who was one of the founders of the city of Carlsbad, California. While he was digging a well for his farm, he discovered artesian springs with mineral water that was very similar to the water from the world-famous health resort in Karlsbad, Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic). Frazier bottled the water, naming it Carlsbad Mineral Water, and renamed the town from Frazier Station to Carlsbad.

Riding along “The Strand”…

Pausing at Lifeguard Hut #5.

As soon as I saw the Oceanside Pier, I had to ride my bike out on it… regardless of it being lawful or not.

First built in 1888, the Pier was destroyed by raging seas in 1890, rebuilt between 1894-1896, and destroyed again in 1902. The structure in this picture dates to 1987.

Here’s the view looking north

My next stop was Oceanside Harbor. I caught this sailboat coming in.

Leaving the harbor, I turned eastward onto the 10.7 mile, San Luis Rey River Trail. Before it was paved, the right of way was a rail line used by the United States Armed Forces to move cargo along the river.

The views along the way back to my campsite were worth stopping for…

All in all, a beautiful, no-drama day. It’s nice to have those once in a while.

  1. You have done and seen so much. We’ve been here since 2014, but have seen very little of CA. We are more familiar with Ohio, Penn., Kentucky and Tenn. Msybe now that you’re introducing us to CA, we’ll see more of it. 🤓

  2. A Polly Shore reference…. I would have never guessed coming from you, haha, that’s hilarious!!! Another great trip in your own backyard!

  3. Glad you enjoyed a ‘no drama’ camp Van.

Beautiful setting, thanks for the pictures

Well done on achieving the milestone of 25 camping trips in 25 months!!

  4. I enjoyed your no drama adventure! I will assume it was legal to ride on the pier!!! Great trip and beautiful pictures! I had to Google Pauly Shore and it still did not help at all — plus, I’m not into tanning or sitting on sand at the beach!!! But I will walk on the wet sand!

  5. What a peaceful-looking place! I can’t help but see that shot of the marina as the opening backdrop to Gilligan’s Island.
